About St Barnabas Church

St Barnabas is the Anglican Parish Church serving east Sutton, Surrey.  We are part of the Church of England and we fall within the area south of the River Thames known as the Diocese of Southwark.  We are listed in "A church near you" at this page.

We work closely with the other two Anglican churches in Sutton, St Nicholas in the town centre and Christ Church further south.  We are also in regular contact with the other Anglican churches in the London Borough of Sutton.

Our Christian faith is described in the Church of England web site.  Further information about symbols of faith that can be seen in our building can be found in our welcome leaflet (440 kB pdf).

Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals

We offer traditional Church of England baptism, wedding and funeral services; apply to the priest at

The Church of England provides on its web-site a "Life events" section which gives information about baptisms, weddings and funerals such as who is entitled to have them.  To be eligible for these services you may need to live within our parish and be prepared by the ministers.

Another part of the Church of England website has a table of the statutory fees for the basic services.  You can ask for "extras" for weddings and funerals in addition to the basic service, such as hiring an organist and making a video. There is also a special website section about wedding ceremonies.

We are required by church law to collect details in our registers of the people for whom we provide baptisms, marriages or funerals, and these records are kept securely for ever.  We regret that we are not licensed for playing a recording or printing the words of songs or poems that are in copyright, that is, whose authors are alive or who died within the last 90 years.

The Church Building

The building was designed by Carpenter & Ingelow of Regent Street and constructed in phases between 1881 and 1884.  The west porch was added in 1902–4 and the War Memorial Chapel in the early 1920s.

The building is fitted with an induction loop for hearing aid users, and worshippers may use the toilets in the halls behind the church building.  The pipe organ is used regularly.  Please take responsibility for the safety of any children or vulnerable adults that you bring into the church bulding, halls or grounds.  We suggest you wear warm warm clothing when visiting in winter.
